One of the most significant contributors to human error in aviation safety is the set of “Five Hazardous Attitudes.” The attitudes are antiauthority , impulsivity , invulnerability , macho , and resignation . These attitudes are negative thought patterns that can influence a pilot’s decision-making process. Each attitude represents a different way a person may rationalize unsafe behavior. For example, antiauthority involves rejecting rules or procedures, while impulsivity leads to acting without sufficient thought. Invulnerability creates the belief that accidents only happen to others, macho encourages unnecessary risk-taking to prove capability, and resignation reflects a mindset of giving up responsibility and leaving outcomes to chance.
